Come by Cafe Vega on November 9th between 7pm - 9pm and meet me (yay!) and the other featured photographers. It's a perfect opportunity to shop for the holidays as well (hint hint) and a portion of all sales will go to the NW Harvest charity.
So, drop by and say hello, buy my photo for a special friend and make everyone happy. Oh, and my photo is the one I am holding up here. It's a unique re-process of a photo I took in Seattle's International District back in 2005.
Okay, several people have "tagged" me for this, so I supposed there is a popular demand. However, let me just say that I will not be tagging anyone, because I honestly don't like the chain-letter-style way that works. But enough of that, here are the facts.
1. I'm an artist
I realize it sounds pretentious to some, but honestly, to me it's like saying I'm a carpenter. Everything I've ever done has been at the very least related to art. Apart from my career at 7-Eleven, which lasted all of three days.
2. I buck authority
I've never liked authority figures, unless they were the kind who show you the same kind of respect they themselves demand. For that reason, I've gotten in trouble throughout my schooldays (from 1st grade to high school) and all the way into my work as an adult. Some people don't like me because of it. I'm fine with that.
3. I will never work a 9-5 job again
At least not if I can help it. It's not that I mind working though. It's just that I can't stand the corporate/office mentality. I had my fun in IT. Never again even if the money was good.
4. I haven't read the classics
Though I myself write novels, I have hardly read any of the big classics. To me it's mainly coincidence though, as there are simply so many great books to read, and I always happen to get into the more contemporary stuff. Some people scoff at my casual attitude towards the litterary giants, but that's their problem.
5. I despise all organized religion
I am totally fine with people having their own beliefs, but I cannot stand religious organizations. Personal faith and the following of a church are two very different things, and all the worst nutters and extremists in the world, all belong to the latter.
Happy now? If I were to have tagged anyone, I would have tagged: Tom Waits, Edward James Olmos, Keith Richards, Paul Auster and Stephen Hawking.
I've added myself to the fabulous site last.fm. If you don't know it, it's a site that keeps track of what you're listening to. It will generate weekly charts, let you share your musical tastes and discoveries - you can even explore the lists of those whom you don't know, but who happen to be listening to stuff that you also like.
It's very cool. Do check it out - and as an extra incentive, I'll let you in on a secret: You can download three of my songs for free via my artist page! Okay, not so secret. Blatant self-promotion in fact, but there you go.
So, I was thinking that I would try to rediscover photography. This meant going back to shooting film (even though I actually started on digital), especially on my Holga and my Fisheye Lomo. I've also been wanting to do more candid shots, people on the streets and other things that aren't necessarily usable stock.
Photography started out as something that was just fun to do, but in the last year and a half, I began thinking of it too much like a job, and I forgot to have fun. In the end, it felt like a chore, coming up with new "concept" and preparing sessions and then photoshop a bunch of very similar images over the next couple of months. By taking a step back, I hope to find the path of rediscovering the fun - and the art - of photography.
It's great to learn the rules - and then break them. I now know the rules of composition, lighting and processing images. It's time to try and use that knowledge in a new way, and see if I don't grow as result of it.
When it comes down to it, I am not really a stock photographer. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with selling my images on iStockphoto, but if you take all the things I do and add them together: Writing novels, podcasting, making music, taking pictures and making little movies for myself ... does that scream stock photographer to you?
A man has got to live, and iStock has been my mealticket for quite a while now. I love the freedom that comes with that - I can stay up as long as I want to (night people are right people!), take days off in the middle of the week, travel and all those good things. But I can't afford to lose the inspiration, and so, I am simply taking a break from thinking along the stock photo lines. If usable shots come out anyway, I'll definitely upload them, and I am also flirting with the idea of shooting some stock video at some point. But first, I'll just write my novel and snap shots of whatever I feel like.
This is a song I had actually finished, but I wasn't happy with the way the vocals sounded, so I kept it lying around till I could re-record on better equipment. And that's exactly what I have done today.
This is also the perfect opportunity for you to test your knowledge of the Danish language. The song is called "Tiden der går", which doesn't translate directly (as in word for word), but it could be translated with "Times Passes".
Enjoy.
I had been wanting a bass for years, but in spite of having bought several guitars over the years, I somehow never got around to getting the bass. Until today.
Lately, I have been making a lot of music, and it has bothered me more and more, that I've had to play the bass on my puny keyboard, using its puny keyboard sounds (or actually the sounds from GarageBand), so as soon as I got home from the store, I sat down and a quick-n-dirty bass track for one of my recent songs.
And how could I not share?
The song is in Danish and is called Hun Danser (She Dances). It is not only my first recording using my new bass. It is also the first one, using my new MIC200 pre-amp and a new mic.
Anyway, here it is. Enjoy.
I figured, I'd play around with the features this place has to offer a little more, so I decided to upload one of my songs. That's right, a song written and performed by yours truly. The lyrics are in Danish but the music is, as far as I know, universal.
The song is about a friend of mine, I haven't seen in a long time, but whom I've been able to follow online. The title loosely translates into something like Now And Again.
The song was recorded in my bedroom, using my iBook and GarageBand. I've played most of the instruments on a keyboard (including the drums), and I am no great keyboard player. So be warned. And be gentle.
